De-Stressing Kitty
My Kitty, Stressed?
Signs & Symptoms of Kitty Stress
Oh, yes. Your kitty can become stressed from and in various scenarios, so it is
important when to recognize this, or even better, anticipate this so you can
intervene BEFORE they are stressed.
Situations That Can Lead To A Stressed-Out Kitty
Anything new, unfamiliar, or changes in the environment can lead to your
baby becoming stressed.  For example:
1. Going to their furever homes!
2. Adding a new pet into the family
3. Adding a new human baby to the family
4. Home construction or remodeling
5. Whirlwind house cleaning (i.e. Spring Cleaning)
6. The always dreaded suction monster used in those cleaning sessions
7.  Moving
8.  Travel in the car or on a plane
9.  Visits to the veterinarian
10.  Guests or visitors being entertained at your house
11. Kitty visitors to the outside of your home, peeking in windows
12. Fireworks or loud, sudden noises in or outside the home (i.e. outdoor construction)
Why Kitty is Stressed in these Situations?
Change is pretty hard on our feline friends. Much of what is
going through their heads are their instincts - instincts of
survival and protection of their territory. Once a Kitty comes
into a new home - they 'check it out' to identify all of the
environment, including the humans and other pets in the
household. Once they determine there is stability in the
situation, and they learn to identify how you or your pets react in
various situations, they have taken control over their
environment. The home is now their domain.
There can be various intensity levels of reaction to a new situation, and each kitty is an individual, and
so will react in different ways, according to their socialization when young.
When reacting to stress, your kitty may do a number of various behaviors:
-Panting
-Pacing around one area of the house
-Cleaning themselves incessantly (displaced preening)
-Pulling out their fur (just a higher intensity to the dysfunctional preening)
-Hiding and watching activities happening
-Jumping onto a high spot and watch the activities happening
-They may seek you out for reassurance and comfort (which is what you want them to do)
-Aggressively confront a new pet in the house, or one they see outside
-Marking their territory - typically when stressed, cats will use the marking methods of wiping
the side of their cheeks against something - this leaves some 'kitty spit', and their scent,
marking their territory. Another way is to scratch an area - like a scratching post, carpet,
furniture, etc. because there are scent glands on their paws as well as on their heads behind
the ears (why they head butt and rub items, including YOU). The most serious marking of
territory is spraying a pungent urine onto strategically placed items around your house, and
sometimes, on the VERY thing they claim as their prize possession - YOU! This last marking
activity typically is restricted to males and females that are still 'complete' - have not been
spayed or neutered yet, and they sense that their territory has been threatened by
something - whether actual or imaginary.
OK, I think you have all waited long enough to find out the answers on how to
destress your kitty. So let's get started.
After spending time with your babies, you will start to
know what is a stressor to them. If the stressor can
not be avoided, there are multiple things you can do.
One thing to always do is to talk to your kitty in quiet,
soothing tones, telling them it will be "alright". For example,
introducing a new cat - they might meet and touch noses,
and then your cat hisses. That is normal behavior to tell the
new cat they have entered MY territory. Just reassure
your baby. Praise them when they touch noses and do not
hiss or growl. Provide treats in those situations. Pay more
attention to your kitty than to the new inductee to let them
know that you are still their 'number one'.
